A few weeks ago Jeff and I had the opportunity to participate in the Sandy clean up. Our church was canceled for the day and all who were able helped those affected by Sandy. There were over 1,000 volunteers that day. We took a bus to the Rockawa's about two and a half hours away. When we arrived our group was able to help a lady named Irene. Irene lives in a two story home, just a few blocks from the beach. The storm surge rose close to 8ft high, completely covering her cars. The water damage was immense and overwhelming.
Irene has been living on her second story ever since the storm hit and hadn't had any help cleaning out her first floor. She seemed so relieved when we showed up at her door. The rest of the day was spent cleaning out all of her belongings and trying to account for and salvage anything we could.
I'm so grateful we had the opportunity to serve someone in need. It was an experience I'll never forget.

One of the women in our group was cleaning out the kitchen when she suddenly fell through the floor. She fell about three feet deep and bruised and scraped her legs pretty bad. The firemen came to check her out and make sure she was okay. They had lots of questions about our church and were so grateful we were out helping people.

This is probably very inappropriate but I couldn't resist. We found this movie in all of the debris and thought it was so funny.
We found a lot of black mold throughout the home. Luckily we had our masks the whole time.

After we finished at Irene's, we took a walk over to the beach. We found the boardwalk completely torn apart and disfigured.

I'm glad you got to be a part of something so amazing. I would have loved to have gone out there and helped personally, but I'm glad I was able to at least help in ways I could from across the country.
